Vice Chair Introduction

 Hi everyone! I’m Zoe (she/her), a vice chair for the International Bioethics Committee at this conference. I’m a computer science major and data science minor. This is my first year in BMUN, and so far I’m loving providing students with the opportunity to study and debate important world issues. Outside of BMUN, I rock climb, snowboard, and I want to pick up roller skating. I’m looking forward to seeing you all at conference!

Topic A Discussion: Updates with Scientist He Jiankui

Hey delegates!  I was reading a little bit more about our first topic, genome editing and CRIPSR, when I came across this article I think you would find interesting:  https://www.wired.com/story/the-crispr-baby-scientist-is-back-heres-what-hes-doing-next/ . It builds off one of our case studies, He Jiankui, and what the scientist is up to having been released from prison in China. Feel free to give it a quick read, and I’ll also summarize its main points below: Background: In November 2018, Chinese scientist He Jiankui announced that he used CRISPR to edit the genetic makeup of human embryos, resulting in the birth of the world's first gene-edited babies. He's actions faced swift backlash and condemnation from the scientific community as unethical, and he was found guilty of illegal medical practices by a Chinese court in December 2019 and sentenced to three years in prison. Welcome to the International Bioethics Committee!

  Hi delegates! We are so excited to welcome you to BMUN 71 and the International Bioethics C ommittee. In this committee, you will be exploring the underlying ethical dilemmas of pertinent biotechnology . Our first topic addresses regulation of genome editing and CRISPR . Our second topic addresses the ethics of biohacking . This blog will act as our committee’s more informal avenue for discussion and communication before the conference– and we’d love to see you interact with it! The purpose of this blog is to (1) allow you to actively engage with the content of this committee and (2) give you all the opportunity to learn about other countries’ policies before the debate actually starts.
