Welcome to the International Bioethics Committee!

Hi delegates! We are so excited to welcome you to BMUN 71 and the International Bioethics C ommittee. In this committee, you will be exploring the underlying ethical dilemmas of pertinent biotechnology . Our first topic addresses regulation of genome editing and CRISPR . Our second topic addresses the ethics of biohacking . This blog will act as our committee’s more informal avenue for discussion and communication before the conference– and we’d love to see you interact with it! The purpose of this blog is to (1) allow you to actively engage with the content of this committee and (2) give you all the opportunity to learn about other countries’ policies before the debate actually starts. You can post comments on posts that we make and write about literally anything relevant to the topics at hand! For example, if you’ve found follow-up content or research you’d like to share, would like to discuss your country’s opinion on the topic, or have other ideas in mind, this blog is the pl...

Head Chair Introduction: Alana Yang

Hello delegates!  My name is Alana Yang   and I will be your Head Chair for this year's International Bioethics Committee at BMUN LXXI. I'm very excited to hear you all debate some topics that I believe are important to understand as biotechnology grows increasingly prominent.   I'm a second-year majoring in Molecular and Cell Biology and Data Science. Other activities I'm involved in include being a part of biotechnology-based business organization on campus and working for a Berkeley lab studying CRISPR.  This is my first time being a Head Chair for BMUN, but Model UN is very near and dear to my heart—I attended my first conference in 8th grade and have been involved in the activity ever since.  As a biology nerd myself, I'm excited to delve into the bioethics of this year's Topic A on genomics and CRISPR technology. As for Topic B, I look forward to hearing your viewpoints on biohacking and the role that regulation should play in biological r...

Vice Chair Introduction: Ashwat Chidambaram

Hey everyone! My name is Ashwat Chidambaram, and I am currently a Senior here at UC Berkeley majoring in Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences, and minoring in Data Science. I have been involved in MUN on the high school circuit since freshman year, making this my 8th year in MUN. The reason I chose to join BMUN was so that I could get to share the same great experience I had in high school Model UN with all of you! I have always had a deep fascination for biotechnology and bioethics, discussing both the beneficial and dangerous implications that these technologies can have on society. I hope you all leave committee with a working knowledge of these topics at a high level, while also gaining experience competing in Model UN as a whole. Beyond MUN, I have a deep passion for aviation, and am currently a solo-certified private pilot. I also enjoy playing the drums, folding origami, listening to The Kid Laroi and Bruno Mars, and playing ping-pong and basketball for fun. ...

Hi everyone! I’m Zoe (she/her), a vice chair for the International Bioethics Committee at this conference. I’m a computer science major and data science minor. This is my first year in BMUN, and so far I’m loving providing students with the opportunity to study and debate important world issues. Outside of BMUN, I rock climb, snowboard, and I want to pick up roller skating. I’m looking forward to seeing you all at conference! - Zoe Kuebrich
